Introduction
Your retail staff can use the Rivo tile in Shopify POS to convert a customer's loyalty points into Shopify store credit. The credit is added to the customer's Shopify store credit balance and can then be used through Shopify's store credit payment experience.
✨ Points to store credit is available on request. Please contact your CSM to enable it
Pre-requisites
Your Shopify plan includes POS access
You're using new customer accounts
You have the latest version of Shopify POS installed
You have enabled store credit as a payment method for your POS location(s)
Your POS staff has permissions to redeem store credit
Your loyalty program is enabled and uses points as its currency.
Setting up a POS Store Credit reward
From your Rivo Dashboard, go to Loyalty > Points
Scroll to Redeeming Points and select Add Another Reward
Under POS (In-Store), select Store Credit
Enter the reward title
Configure the points type and values:
For a Fixed amount of points reward, enter the number of points the customer spends, then in Reward, enter the store credit amount they receive (e.g. 200 points → $10)
For an Incremented points reward, enter the Increment points value (the block of points converted at a time) and in Reward, the store credit granted per increment
Recommended: For incremental rewards, set the minimum and maximum amounts of points required to redeem a reward. The maximum is the most a customer can spend per redemption
Save and enable the reward.
💡 Tip: Points convert in whole increments. On a 100-point increment, entering 350 converts 300 and leaves 50 in the customer's balance.
Converting a customer's points in Shopify POS
Open Shopify POS
Add a customer to the cart. If the customer doesn't have a profile yet, you can create a new one
Tap the Rivo Loyalty tile
Review the customer's points balance and available promotions
The POS Store Credit reward will show the exact Reward Title in the button:
For a fixed reward, tap the reward to convert the configured number of points into Shopify store credit
For an incremental reward, enter the amount of points to convert first, and then tap the button to complete the redemption
After a successful conversion, Shopify POS displays "Store credit added!" The customer's points are deducted, and the matching amount is added to their Shopify store credit balance
Return to the cart to see the customer's updated Store credit balance
Apply the store credit to the order and check out.
💡 Pro Tip: If the customer has a wallet pass from Rivo, use the scan option in the Rivo Loyalty screen to identify them.
📝 Important Note: Only the full store credit amount can be applied as a payment method. Customers cannot select a partial amount of their store credit to pay for an order online or in-store.
Eligibility and limits
A POS Store Credit reward appears in the Rivo Loyalty tile only when:
The customer is eligible to participate in your loyalty program. You can review the program participants from the Rivo app by going to Settings > General
The reward is enabled. You can switch the reward status from Loyalty > Points > Redeeming Points
The customer has enough points. If their balance is lower than the reward's value, the reward will not appear on the screen
The criteria for incremental reward must be respected. The amount must meet the reward's configured increment, minimum, and maximum to complete the redemption.
Troubleshooting
What you're seeing | What to check |
The POS Store Credit reward does not appear |
|
Shopify POS shows "Failed to add store credit" | For an incremental reward, enter a positive amount that meets the configured minimum and maximum. The amount is converted in complete increments. If the conversion continues to fail, contact Rivo support with the customer and reward details |
The customer received store credit, but no discount was added to the cart | This is expected. The conversion adds value to the customer's Shopify Store credit balance instead of creating a cart discount |
My staff cannot see the "Store credit" balance | Check that your POS staff members have Store credit permissions enabled. They should be able to manage and redeem store credit |
The Shopify store credit hasn't expired yet | Credits Expiry is disabled, or your expiration method is Bulk Credits Expiry. No expiration date is sent to Shopify, so the credit not expiring is expected |
Common questions
Can the customer spend the new store credit on the same in-store purchase?
Yes, as long as store credit is activated as a payment method in your Point of Sale channel and the staff member has the "Redeem store credit" POS permission. After the conversion, return to the cart and tap "Apply" in the store credit section.
Can a conversion be undone?
No. There's no reversal from the POS tile. To correct a mistaken conversion, manually debit the store credit from the customer's profile in the Shopify admin and re-issue the points from the Rivo dashboard.
Why isn't there a discount code for this redemption?
Points-to-store-credit conversions don't generate a discount code. The transaction is recorded as two entries in the customer's points history: one debiting Rivo points, one granting Shopify store credit (payment method), so there's no code to look up.
Does the store credit from a points conversion expire?
Only if you use per credits event expiry. Points Expiry and Credits Expiry are separate settings with separate windows, so expiring points does not expire the credit they were converted into. With "Per credits event expiry" on, the store credit is issued to Shopify with an expiration date and expires on your credits schedule. The points spent are not returned to the customer's balance. With Credits Expiry off or set to Bulk credits expiry, the store credit has no expiration date.
