Piing integration

Show Rivo points and VIP tiers on Piing wallet passes and recognise loyalty members in-store

Written by Ana Rincon

Introduction

Piing gives your customers a branded wallet pass for Apple Wallet or Google Wallet that they can show when they visit your store. With Rivo connected, the pass shows the customer's points balance and VIP tier from Rivo, so your team knows who they're talking to before checkout. Rivo still runs your loyalty program and keeps every points transaction.

✨ This integration requires Developer Toolkit access

What does the integration do?

  • Show each customer's current Rivo points balance and VIP tier on their Piing pass.

  • Recognise loyalty members when they arrive in store by scanning the QR code on their pass.

  • Award Rivo points for in-store activity, like checking in or adding the pass to their wallet.

Prerequisites

  • Piing and Rivo installed on the same Shopify store.

  • A Rivo plan that includes Developer Toolkit access.

  • A Piing install with at least one recorded check-in to test against (see Install the Shopify app on Shopify).

Integration setup

  1. From the Rivo Dashboard, go to Settings > Developer Toolkit.

  2. Under REST API Keys, copy your current API key or create one.

  3. Go to the Piing app > Integrations.

  4. Under Loyalty platforms, select Rivo, then click "Connect."

  5. Set Status to Active and Dispatch mode to Direct API.

  6. Choose Shopify Customer ID as the customer identity.

  7. Paste your Rivo API key into the API key field.

  8. Click Save, then click Test connection to validate your API key.

  9. Go to Wallet Studio > Design.

  10. Under Programme, choose Points from my loyalty app. Set the balance to Loyalty points, and select Use this programme. Make sure that Rivo is recognized.

📝 Important note: Your Rivo account manages one REST API key. If you regenerate it, the old key stops working, so update it in Piing and in every other integration that uses it. More on this in Manage API keys.

Awarding Rivo points from Piing

Piing wallet passes show the points balance and VIP tier by default, but you can also reward customers for in-store activity.

  1. From Piing, go to Integrations > Loyalty platforms > Rivo.

  2. Enable Let Piing award points only after agreeing your reward policy.

  3. Enable the triggers that you want to use for rewarding your wallet pass holders.

  4. Keep test mode enabled until you're ready to launch.

💡 Pro tip: Start with Piing's Test mode on, then turn it off for one live test before launch.

Piing triggers available

  • Customer checks in – An accepted Piing check-in by QR, linked physical card or supported Apple NFC.

  • First time Piing identifies the customer – The first time Piing ever recognises this customer. A welcome bonus.

  • Customer adds the wallet pass (once) – A customer installs their Apple or Google wallet pass. One time only.

  • Purchase after check-in – A customer buys within the attribution window after checking in.

  • Visit milestone (5th, 10th, 25th visit and so on) – A customer reaches a visit milestone (5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 100th visit).

  • Customer visits a new store – A customer checks in at a store they have never visited before.

How Piing sends points to Rivo

The Rivo "Custom Action" earning rule

Setup in Rivo

None

A Custom Action earning rule whose name exactly matches the one entered in Piing

Frequency limits

Piing's limits are the only safeguard

The Custom Action's limits apply on top of Piing's

Rule must be active

Only in Piing

In both Piing and Rivo. If the Custom Action is inactive or the name doesn't match (case-sensitive), no points are awarded

Email notifications and expiry settings

  • Expiry settings apply to the points earned

  • Points earned count toward point-based VIP programs

  • Earning points through Custom Actions triggers the Points Earned email or ESP event

  • Expiry settings apply to the points earned

  • Points earned count toward point-based VIP programs

Setting up the Custom Actions

Use this if you want in-store activity to show in points history and reporting as a named Way to Earn, and to be controlled by Rivo's own earning rule settings.

  1. In Rivo, go to Loyalty > Points.

  2. Under Earning Points, click "Add Another Way to Earn."

  3. Select the "Custom Action."

  4. Configure the earning rule as you'd like and save changes.

  5. Make sure the earning rule is enabled and copy the Custom Action Name exactly. Matching is case-sensitive.

  6. In Piing, go to Integrations > Loyalty platforms > Rivo and paste it into the Custom action name field for your triggers.

Troubleshooting

  • Test connection fails with an authorization error → The key is incorrect. From the Rivo app, go to Settings > Developer Toolkit and copy the REST API key again.

  • Test connection fails, and you cannot find the Developer Toolkit section in the Rivo app → Your Rivo plan does not include access to a REST API key. Please upgrade or reach out to your CSM.

  • Member is not recognized, or points balance shows as zero → Piing looks the customer up by Shopify customer ID first, then by email address. Please confirm that: (a) both the Shopify profile and Rivo profile use the same email address; (b) the customer is a member rather than a guest.

  • Piing pass not scanning → Confirm the customer installed a Piing-issued pass for your store, then scan its Piing QR code. Their Rivo points and VIP tier appear through the connected loyalty program, and they won't need a separate Rivo pass.

  • Points not awarded → Check that points awarding is enabled in Piing, that the trigger you expect is enabled, and/or that the matching earning rule is active in Rivo.

  • Points balance and VIP tier stop updating during a busy spell → Rivo allows 15 requests per second per API key and returns an error above that. Piing will back off and retry.

Common questions

Do customers need a Piing pass if they already have a Rivo wallet pass?

Yes. For this integration, customers use the Piing pass. Staff shouldn't scan a Rivo wallet pass in Piing.

Which points balance shows on the pass?

The customer's current Rivo points balance. A balance of 0 is normal for new members. Shopify store credit is a separate balance and doesn't show as points.

How quickly does the pass update?

The pass updates when Piing refreshes the customer's data, for example, when they check in in-store. It isn't instant, and Apple and Google decide whether a pass update also shows a notification.

Where do customers redeem rewards?

Piing doesn't show the Rivo rewards available to redeem, so customers might still need to redeem in-store through the Shopify POS extension, or online.

Will Piing import my past loyalty data?

No. Piing reads each customer's balance and tier from Rivo. It doesn't import your full customer or points history.

A customer's balance or tier is missing on their pass. What should I check?

Please make sure the customer exists in both Rivo and Shopify with the same email. Piing looks up the customer by their Shopify customer ID first, then by email.

What happens if I disconnect Piing?

Your customers and their points history stay in Rivo. Turn off Piing's point awards first, and note that passes will stop showing current Rivo balances.

How do I get support for the integration from Piing?

Please contact the Piing team. Include the store, customer reference, and test time.
